Ever wondered what the causes of nail fungus infection really are.

The major causes of nail fungus are – yeast, moulds and dermatophytes. The worst part is that an infection in one toenail may pass onto other toenails in particularly if a proper nail fungus treatmentis not applied early enough.

Other causes of toenail fungal infection can be just poor foot hygiene or damage to the nail. If the infection is fairly recent you may find that the most effective over the counter treatment for nail fungus infections is available at many pharmacists.

The literary term used to refer to the fungal infection or disease that occurs in the toenails and fingernails is Onychomycosis.

This particular health condition does not consider age, gender, ethnicity or race, it affects people all over the world. You can have multiple symptoms of toe fungus, which may include foul or unpleasant odour coming from the nails, nails flaking, an ashy or dry appearance and the occurrence of a yellowish spot on the nail bed. Other manifestations or indications of the occurrence of nail fungus may include – cracked nail edges, overgrowth of the keratin and a thickening of the nails.

Possible solutions are:-

1/ Oral and Topical Medications.

A doctor is able to prescribe oral and topical medications which are much stronger than over the counter creams and ointments. Thus, if the over the counter cream you purchased from your pharmacy does not provide you with the fungal cure, you needed then you should visit your doctor and ask for a prescription. Over the counter creams and ointments may possibly only work on mild or less severe cases of fungus infection and usually only prove effective when applied directly according to the directions provided.

2/ Natural nail fungus remedies

Fungal nail infections on the toenails and fingernails can be treated using tea tree oil and apple cider vinegar for any type of nail fungus. They kill the fungi and bacteria that cause nail infections directly.

The procedure for using tea tree oil – pour a few drops of tea tree oil onto a cotton swan and it to wipe the infected nails, do this twice every day.

In the case of apple cider vinegar – soak the affected nail in a container containing a mixture of water and apple cider vinegar in the ratio of 2 to 1 (or 2:1). On to it, you are free to add a few drops of lavender oil in order to increase the effectiveness of the mixture. You can usually acquire tea tree oil and apple cider from your local health food or organic store.

3/ Lotrimin and Lamisil

Lotrimin and Lamisil are anti fungal creams that may help you to reduce the levels of fungus on your nails and treat some of the symptoms such as discoloration and foul smell. Their major ingredients are Econazole and Miconazole.

They also have the ability to treat other infections or diseases that may be the result of other strains of fungus such as jock itch, yeast infections and athlete’s foot.

4/ Futspa

This is a typical over the counter nail fungus treatment that is packaged as an ointment or rather liquid treatment. Like most of the liquid nail fungus remedies, it can be dropped or brushed onto the infected nails. Just like its fellow antifungal ointments, Futspa contains antibacterial and antifungal ingredients such as thyme and lavender. These ointments should be applied onto the toenails on a daily basis.

5/ Listerine

This is an alcohol-based mouthwash and its major active ingredients include methyl, eucalyptol, thymol, salicylate and menthol.

The procedure for treatment –fill a small basin or container with listerine, soak the affected nails in it for approximately half an hour.

The procedure should be repeated twice every day and should be adhered to for a duration of not less than six months. The warning or possible point of concern here is that it might cause pain when it comes to cracked feet, because Listerine is an alcohol-based solution. However, apart from that it is one of the most effective ways to kill nail fungus.

6/ Vicks Vaporub

This is a  topical analgesic cough suppressant .The surprise here is that some people use it as a nail fungus treatment. The procedure when using it is that, you that you rub the infected nails with a proper dose of Vicks Vaporub twice a day for a period between six and sixteen months.

This nail fungal treatment lacks supported recommendations. A series of researches indicate that of 60% of those suffering from nail fungus find it an ineffective fungal cure. Both the United State Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) and the makers of Vicks Vaporub do not approve it as a nail fungus treatment.

7/ Beer

Beer is another of the nail fungus home treatments.

Preparation – at room temperature one litre of dark beer, 1 litre of white vinegar and half sachet of acidophilus mixed in a pot or basin.

Treatment procedure- soak the infected toenails or fingernails in the solution for about half an hour a day for a period of one  to three months.
